get fixed

先月、NYからデザイナーが来日した時の会話。
私は彼女の担当では無いけれど、久し振りの再会を喜び、少しの時間一緒に仕事をした。
彼女のデザインするチャームを猫にプレゼントした、、という話しをしたときに、
「まだ生後６ヶ月だったけど避妊手術をしたから」と言おうとした時に、はて、避妊手術って英語で何だっけ？　
確か、、spay? saspy? 　えーい、「私の猫、妊娠しないように卵取ったのよ」はい、これで十分通じます。で、彼女が教えてくれたのが、get fixed.  　直訳すると「整える」とか「矯正する」という意味になるのかな。『人間には使わないわよ、あ、でも性転換手術なら使うかな？』
なるほど、get fixed、便利な表現ね。

The conversation with a designer from New York the other day.    She usually works with one of my colleague not me but we were glad to meet again and worked for a while together at that time.
When I was talking to her that I gave her designed tiny letter charm to my cat, I wanted to say "because she had a surgery of....." well. what to say a surgery not to get pregnant in English?  Was it sapy? saspy?

So I kept saying "she took her eggs out not to get pregnant"  yes,,, that's enough.  Then she said, "oh, that's -get fixed-"... I did not know to use it for that occasion.  And she added "that's not expression for human...but sometimes it could be used for a gender change operation...?"
Well, "get fixed"  I remember such a useful expression.

A manhole

私の家は大阪城に近い。
豊臣秀吉の時代は大阪城内だったそう。
家の近所には秀吉が大阪城の城下町を建設した際に造られ、今でも下水道として活用されている大阪市指定史跡　通称「太閤下水」が流れている。

My house is closed to the Osaka Castle.  The area I live was a part of the castle town nearly 400 years ago; the era of Hideyoshi Toyotomi.
There is a sanitary sewer that was built when Toyotomi constructed the castle town.  The sewer designated historical site of the Osaka city is still working.

これは、南仏エクサンプロヴァンスで見つけたセザンヌのマンホール。

This tiny manhole art is Cezanne on the street of Aix-en-provence near Cezanne atrier.









マンホールとはmahholeと書く。
man=人   hole=穴
つまり、人が通る穴という意味らしい。しかし一部のアメリカのフェミニストがmanを男と解釈し差別ととらえて personholeとも呼ぶらしい。　こういうのも何だかナンセンスのような。

Manhole; man= human... but some feminist in USA translated man as male and started call to say "personhole".... sounds nonsense...

Didn't you realize that?

昨日TVニュースで、何の会議か覚えていないけれど、政治家が寄り集まって今後の社会保障について話し合った際に、「高齢化社会に向けての若年層による社会保障負担がますます厳しくなることから、会議では若者の雇用の機会を早急に作ることが大事だということで一致した」と言っていた。

すみません、お尋ねしますが、それが大事だってこと今までご存じなかったんでしょうか？

同じ日の別のニュースで、日本の大学生の就職率が68%である一方、
本来　日本の若者が入りたいはずの大企業が日本人を採らずに、
日本のレベルの高い大学で学ぶ留学生を積極的に雇用しているという特集をやっていた。
いくら日本が新卒の雇用不調と言っても、留学生の本国に比べるとマシであることと、
世界的に技術と知名度の高い日本の会社に魅力を感じている留学生が多く、彼らは必死で日本で学ぶハングリー精神を持ち、少なくとも母国語と日本語を操れる。　企業は国内市場が縮小する中で海外に活路を求めている、、需要と供給がマッチしているらしい。

そして同じ日のまた別のニュースで、就職説明帰りの大学3年生が高速バスで「みんな死ぬぞ！俺を殺してくれ！」と叫びながら突如運転手からハンドルを奪い、バスを横転させて12人が負傷の殺人未遂容疑で逮捕された男子学生は「自殺したかった」と。

時代は予期せぬスピードで動いている一方で、自暴自棄になる愚かな日本の若者による恐ろしい事件が起きている。

政治家のみなさん、早く気づいてくださいね。

The evening news last night said that the government discussed social security servises crisic of coming the aging society issue and concluded that creation of job opportunity and decreasing of jobless for young people should be one of the most proiority to manage the social security in future.
...excuse me, can I interrupt?  Didn't you realize that??

A different news of yesterday said that rate of employment of new graduates decreased to 68% though, Japanese famous giant companies are expanding the hiring number of new graduates but looking for foreign students at good universities.  Even worse job rate among Japan, it is better than their own countries for foreign students, plus Japanese companies are still famous for advanced high technology and its"brand", many foreign students feel attractive to work there.  They study very hard and speak more than 2 languages.  And companies are looking for expanding of business opportunities outside of Japan as domestic market is shrinking. So, their supply & demands seems to be matched.

Another different news of last night said that the university studen arrested for overtuning highway bus in suside bid.  He grabbed the wheel from the bus driver screaming "everybody will die! please kill me!" and 12 people were injured.  He is job hunting the junior in university and he was on the way to home from Osaka where he had a job fair.

Things are going to many direction with mach speed that nobody expected, and a tragety by a adult-child university student.

Politicians, please aware of the real world.

Something old fashion

どれだけコンピューターや電子通信がポピュラーになろうとも、
文房具屋さんに足を運ぶたびに胸が躍る。
たくさんのノート、ペン、ポストカードや革張りのペントレイなど
見ているだけで時間を忘れる。
パーフェクトな出会いを毎回見つけることはごく稀だけど、
棚から棚へとぶらぶら歩くのは、
見知らぬ土地をぶらぶら歩いているような
リラックスと緊張が同居している感覚。

Whatever computers and electric comunication way is getting popular,
going to stationary stores makes me more exicited.
Variety of notebooks, pens, cards, leather pentrays..... I loose track of time by just looking around them.
I hardly find the perfect something everytime, wandering from a shelf to another is "relax and tension" that is something similar feeling when wandering unknown places.

きょうは「一昔風」な「手板」と思いがけず良い出会い。
板はリサイクルの硬い木質繊維で出来ていて風合いもいい感じ。
でも何より気に入ったのは、このカバー。
色、フォント、バランス、すべてにおいてパーフェクトなデザイン。
額に入れて何気なく飾っておきたい。
そしてキャッチコピーに参った！　「あなたの大切な書類の保管に」。
いまどき書類はコンピューター保存なのに、、そんな時代遅れが愛おしい。

I encountered an old fashion clip boards today.
It uses recycled hard wood fiber  board and texture is good.
 But what I love more than the board is this "cover".
Colors, fonts, balance... the design is so perfect in every single detail.  I want to display them with a frame.
And, it says.... "protect & keep your valuable documents".... it makes me struck!  Nowadays everybody store their valuable documents in computors... I really love this type of old fashion feeling.

Long time no update

久し振りの更新です。
この１ヶ月の間、忙しく時間だけが流れて行ってます。
健康で毎日働き毎日ご飯を食べられることは本当は大変な幸せなこと。
でも、それがあたかも当たり前すぎて目の前のことを軽く見て
遠くのことを追いかけてしまいがち。自分のことを忘れてしまいがち。
時間に追われてしまいがち。そして何かを「思う、念ずる」心も薄くなりがち。
そんな時にある人から贈られた言葉。

Long time no update.
I have been busy for a month and time goes by so quickly.
Being healthy, working everyday and having food to live is really more than happy.
But I tend to think it too ordinary, tend to look lighter things in front of me and to look for something very far away.  I tend to forget to think and do my own things and to be crunched for time.
And I tend not to think and pray.
Here is the word given by somebody to me...

最高のことだけを予期して期待して
最低のことだけに向き合う準備もしておいて
それ以外のことはどーでも良くて
自分自身のことをしっかり考えて
自分自身のために行動しよう

...  っていう意味になるかな。　ちょっと硬いけど。。英語だと韻も踏んで（bestとworstとか、thinkとthingとか）もっとリズム良いんだけどね。







さてさて、アンディ・ウォホール好きな私にドンピシャなお土産。
他に、マイケル・ジャクソンとか、オバマ大統領とかあったらしいけど、
jjにならこれっ！って。　このお土産、もっと早くに受け取るはずがタイミングがずっと会わなくて先月頂きました。　だから、選んでくれたのはこのブログを立ち上げる前でアンディの話しもしたことがなく、だから彼女の観察力の鋭さに感服しました。
その後、このブログを見てやっぱりーと思ったそう。
確かにフィーリングの会う人とは、好きそうなレストラン、好きそうな音楽、好きそうなお店、、そういうのが通じ合うもの。だから、とっても嬉しかった。みきチャンありがとう！

Here is the perfect souvenir for me who love Andy Warhol.   There are Michael Jackson, Mr. President Obama etc though, Miki selected it for me.  I was supposed to receive it in earlier but we have been missing to meet each other and finally I received it in last month.  So, she selected Andy for me before reading my blog about him and we did not talk about it ... so I was impressed her strong powers of observation.

It is true that somebody having very common vibration on feeling or sense with you, we can expect his/her taste of restaurant, music, movie, shops... and it works very well in most of cases.  So, I was very happy to have this Andy.  Thank you Miki chan!!

PARIS!

きょうから母と妹が仏蘭西8日間の旅行。
PARISを拠点に、あちこちと足を延ばすらしい。　一つの国に8日間滞在は理想的な観光旅行。
春のオランダ・ベルギーに続いて（あのときはアイスランドの火山噴火で長期滞在を余儀なくされたが）、ヨーロッパ旅行は心身ともにリラックスするらしい。
良いことです！　確かに旅は色んな意味で心のネジやパーツが新しく磨かれる。
帰ってきてからの土産話がとっても楽しみ、、なんてったってJJが大好きなPARISですから。。。！

My mother and sister went to France for 8 days today.
They plan to visit and stay some cities from Paris.  It is one of ideal sightseeing to stay 8 days in one country.
They enjoyed a trip to Holland and Belgium in April (at that time they forced to stay longer due to a volcane erruption in Island), and they feel traveling in Europe is one of really relaxing their body and mind.  Yes, it is wonderful!!  I agree with them that traveling polishes screws and parts in mind in many means and makes us feel active.  I am very exiting to hear from them after the trip... because they are in PARIS; my favorite city PARIS!!

きょうから11月なんて！？
あっという間に残すところ2か月です。
毎年この時期になると、「今年は何をしたか？」「どんな成長があったか？」と考え込みます。

さて、そんなこんなで忙しい10月下旬でしたが、先週は久しぶりにDJのシャーリー富岡さんとランチをご一緒して楽しい時間を過ごしたり、おいしいものを食べたりして、仕事以外にも楽しいひと時があった1週間でした。

ところで先日ニュースでGoogleが電子ブックに参入とかで、世界各地の大学の図書館をはじめ10万部とも20万部とも言われる蔵書のスキャニングにいそしみ、そのうち「本」が「電子書籍」に代わる日も遠くない、、と。 スキャニングのコストはすべてGoogle負担、世界各地のあるスキャン工場は秘密だそう。

尊敬するOXFORD　英英辞書によると、「本」すなわち a book　の意味は
 a written or printed work consisting of pages glued or sewn together along one side and bound in covers:
つまり、1枚1枚のページに書かれたもの、もしくは印刷物で、その束の一方をノリ付けもしくは縫い綴じてあり表紙が付いたもの、、というのが定義。

しかし、電子書籍の時代が来ると、この定義が根本的に変わってしまう。
電子端末で読む本なんて、味気ないことこの上ない。

本の楽しみの一つは、「紙の臭い」なのに。　新書なら力強い臭い、古本ならほこり臭いような甘いような臭い。　そんな「五感」も含めてフィクション・ノンフィクションの世界に連れてってくれるのが a book なのに。　　電子端末をあやつれないお年寄りとか、経済的ゆとりの無い人がこんなところでも淘汰されている。

それと、私の憧れは無造作に本がいっぱい並べられた本棚。　背表紙の色・厚み・文字、、無造作ゆえの完成された本棚という世界観。　これも電子書籍なら味わえない。

Can't believe it is already in November!!  Only rest of less than 2 months till the end of 2010.  I usually think what I have done and how I grow up this year especially in this season.

Well,  I was having hectic days as usual but luckly had a happy moment other than working such as lunch with DJ Shirley Tomioka and delicious foods. 
I read a news that Google has been investigating into "electric book business" and they are collecting ten millions or twenty millions books from university libraries worldwide to scan them at Google's cost and at top secret scanning factories worldwide..

According my reliable Oxford English dictionary, a book is defined as "a written or printed work consisting of pages glued or sewn together along one side and bound in covers"  But this definition will be changed when new era of electric books has come.  No joy of reading a book from "a pad".

One of joy of reading a book is "smell" of paper I believe.  New books smell stronger and old / second hand book smell dusty but sweet.  A book takes me somewhere in fiction and non-fiction world with such body feeling.  And there would be the degital devide between who can have and can not have or can not use.

My ideal book shelf is the one pilled lots of books; variety of thickness, design, size, colors... it's a beauty by rough and simple as a world of a book shelf.  No one can enjoy it by a pad book.
